Accident Summary:

On mission escorting personnel detector aircraft which reported a hot area. As lead gunship started suppressive fire, the pilot felt a severe jolt on his right foot. The right door gunner's protective rod on his M-60 failed allowing the gunner to inadvertently hit the right side of the aircraft. The safety rod was attached to the barrel of the M-60 machine gun with safety wire instead of bolted securely in place.
